The below message is from Jim Brailler in the Office of International Education.
Please remember that departments must place at least one advertisement in a nationally-circulated print journal during the recruitment process for tenure-track faculty positions.
Many departments regularly attract a high number of foreign nationals as applicants for tenure-track faculty positions. The probability of hiring foreign nationals for tenure-track positions is high, particularly in the engineering, physical, life, and heath sciences.
While many departments are beginning to rely exclusively on "on-line" advertisements, such advertisements alone, which are not accompanied by at least one print advertisement, are not sufficient to meet requirements for later sponsorship of foreign faculty for U.S. permanent residence (i.e., "green cards"). Foreign faculty must obtain permanent residence before they can be tenured or promoted. Thus, failure to place at least one advertisement in a print journal may make it impossible for foreign faculty to successfully obtain permanent residence, and subsequently promotion and tenure.
Unfortunately, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) is not likely to dispense with the print journal advertisement requirement in the near future. Historically, DOL has accepted advertisements in the "Chronicle for Higher Education" as sufficient to meet the requirement, although it prefers advertisements in a journal in a particular field likely to yield the highest number of qualified applicants for the advertised position.
