Protocol for introduction of off-site compost material
|
PURPOSE: The objective of the following protocol is to protect the OARDC herds and flocks from exposure to pathogens not currently present in their environment. |
LOCATION Contact Ken Scaife and Gerald Reid for site location which is well isolated from animal housing areas and has limited traffic.
Off- site manure includes manure from other OARDC branch locations, ATI, and OSU campus facilities
Off limits for imported Manure: compost pad, compost building, and any area within range of animal facility.
Current facilities (compost pad, building) must be clearly labeled as off limits for imported manure.
Location housing off-site manure must be clearly labeled as containing possible contaminants. Disposal information must also be clearly stated.
RECORDS Contact list when bringing in off-site manure.
Head of research operations- Mr. Ken Scaife Farm Operations/ research operations-Mr. Gerald Reid Agricultural engineering-Dr. Harold Keener Attending veterinarian- Dr. Juliette Hanson Chair animal sciences- Dr. Joy Pate Head Food Animal Health Reseach Program – Dr. Mo Saif Supervisors of affected animal facilities.
Two-week notice requested to allow time for any arrangements to be made.
Information supplied should include: source of material, content, method of disposal and the dates expected at facility.
DISINFECTION Equipment and vehicle disinfections. Broad spectrum disinfectant- Virkon recommended. Debris must be removed for disinfectant to be reliable. Low pressure power wash application 300 ml/sqm. Allow to air dry.
Cold weather may require movement of vehicles to heated area for manure removal and sanitation. Once a permanent location is established specific protocols for equipment movement and sanitation sites need to be established
Shared equipment should be sanitized on site, as above, prior to leaving compost area.
Equipment used to move manure piles should not be used to move animal feed, feed additives, bedding or other material that comes in contact with animals.
CONTAINMENT Aerosol spread of disease is most likely during the first 3 weeks on site. Tarp or indoor enclosure is required during this time.
Efforts should be made to control pests, rodents and flies. Baiting and repellant sprays should be used during the first 3-week period.
Leachate should be contained and removed to off site location. Material can be placed in plastic bags, bags sprayed with disinfectant and transported to dumpster or autoclave.
Area around the pile and the tarp should be disinfected every other day for the first 3-week period.
Personnel working with compost should be advised to avoid contact with animal facilities during the initial 3-week period.
Manure/ Compost from off site should not be spread on OARDC fields. Facility must be clearly labeled to this effect.
Samples should be collected in such a way as to minimize aerosol spread. Samples can be placed in plastic bags or covered containers for removal and disposed of by autoclave or dumpster.
No materials should be disposed of on OARDC fields. A plan for manure removal needs to be defined
SAFETY Handling manure can pose some health risks to employees. Gloves should be worn if handling manure and disposable boots or rubber boots that can be sanitized should be worn. A footbath of Virkon will be used at compost exit. Coveralls or lab coats should be worn during sampling and compost turning. These garments should be used at the compost facility only and not worn in any animal units.
