Over the last several months, various University offices have received inquiries regarding loss or damage of personal property on University premises. The purpose of this memo is to clarify existing University policy regarding financial responsibility in these cases. While the University recognizes its responsibility to provide a working environment that is as safe and secure as possible, it cannot accept responsibility for loss of personal property or vehicles which are personal property.
Personal property brought into the workplace is done so at the employee's own risk. This includes wallets, purses, artwork, decorations and radios, as well as personal papers, books, periodicals and other materials, whether or not they are used in conjunction with an employee's job responsibilities. All faculty, staff and students are encouraged to purchase a standard home owner or renter's property insurance policy, which in most cases will provide some coverage for losses of personal property at work.
Personally owned automobiles and other vehicles are also subject to the limitations described above. If personal automobiles or vehicles are used for University business, the individual employee is eligible to be reimbursed at the University's mileage rate, which is to cover vehicle expense, including insurance.
We hope this memo is helpful in clarifying University policy. We ask that you share this information with your colleagues, including department chairs and supervisors, as appropriate.
