Research Overview
Ecosystem Management

As an extension and application of ecological principles, faculty, research scientists, postdoctoral students and students within the department are working on projects related to ecosystems management, including field, farm, community, watershed and regional scales, and the links from farmer to market to consumer.
For example, the majority of our faculty are engaged and actively working on ecologically based management of arthropods representing a broad array of functions – IPM, biological control, pollinator surveys, urban and rural landscape management, watershed and toxicology related projects, regional food system and value-adding of agricultural products efforts, nutrient management and composting, developing novel modeling and analytical methods for evaluating agroecosystem health and so forth.
A unique area of ecosystems management focus for our department that is central to achieving the ecological paradigm is environmental toxicology. With the development of pesiticides for the control of insects, the roots of ecotoxicology extend deep into the fabric of entomology. The department serves as the logical place at The Ohio State University and nationally for a focus of ecotoxicology research.
