Events:
- Museum of Biological Diversity Open House
Issues of biodiversity are increasingly in the public consciousness, usually reinforced through personal experiences at zoos, aquaria, and conservatories. Our goal is to open the doors of our archives at the Museum of Biological Diversity to offer the general public a glimpse of the species we study from around the world, and personal access to the scholarly excellence of our OSU scientists. The challenge is to make a research facility accessible and attractive to large numbers of people without compromising the fundamental function of the faculty and staff stationed there. Our solution is to sponsor an annual event in which we welcome the public to visit the research areas. We staff the event with 50 OSU scientists, we provide educational activities for children, and we offer a popular educational lecture by an internationally prominent biologist. We offer our sponsors a very visible stake in the most "green" science, and a chance to capitalize on the public relations rewards of a successful outreach program.
- Insect Night Walk at Secrest Arboretum in July
The Wooster Entomology Graduate Students Association has been providing this fun-filled family evening for several years running. Held in the Secrest Arboretum, the evening features educational games for kids with buggy prizes, insect collecting, firefly calling with LED’s (yes, if you get the flash pattern right you can get them to land on your thumb!), and a hike after dark to see what’s coming to light traps and other local attractions.
- A Bug's World
Each spring the Department invites elementary schools to the Wooster campus for an entomological extravaganza. A dozen sessions are available including the ever popular Bug Zoo and Café Insecta (hey, they’re a lot like shrimp).
