Interests:
Improving the processing of
agricultural and industrial byproducts through the development of
new or improved bioprocessing technologies such as composting and
chemical pretreatment. Specific research
activities include the development of DNA/RNA based analytical tools
for the investigation of microbial community structure and function
in composts, waste treatment processes and amended soils;
engineering processes for efficient conversion of dairy and swine production wastes into composts and other
value-added and stable products that reduce liquid use and air pollution;
development of pretreatment processes for the conversion of
lignocellulosic feedstocks to ethanol, characterizing the effects of composting and other waste management
processes on xenobiotic chemical fates, plant disease suppressive
microorganisms, biodegradable plastics and human and animal pathogens.
