Dog Food Study
Thank-you for your interest
in this scientific study on health and environmental effects of feeding
raw food diets to dogs. This is obviously a new field of
investigation and there are many questions to be answered, such as
effects on allergies, immunity, dental and
orthopedic problems as well as gastrointestinal health. We cannot
answer every question at once. Our goal for this first study is to
determine what effect, if any, does feeding raw meat
have on the carriage and shedding of foodborne
pathogens by dogs.
To achieve this goal we invite you to participate in this
study. Participation involves four simple steps:
- Collect a small (3-4 oz)
sample of your dog's raw food.
- Collect a stool specimen
on the next day.
- Collect your used vacuum
cleaner bag (or contents). This will give us an indication if
bacteria found in the dog feces could have originated from the
environment, not the food.
- Complete the questionnaire.
Once you have these materials
together, e-mail us for your PIN and
shipping instructions (we will cover the shipping costs). Your PIN
will be you method to maintain confidentiality and track your results,
which should be available in about one week and will be posted below.
*All dogs should be healthy, over 1 year
of age and not have received any antibiotics in the last 3 months.
Only one dog per household please. For every raw-fed sample
received, we encourage a submission of a sample from a friend or
colleague's dog that is fed commercial or a cooked home diet.
