Educational Grape-Wine Tour to
Germany
By Michelle "Mike" Widner, Ohio Grape Industries Committee, Ohio
Department of Agriculture
The Ohio Grape Industries Committee (OGIC) is working with the German Wine
Institute to develop a week-long exploration of Germany's wine industry
including visits to the Geisinheim Research Center and Pro Wein trade show. The
trip is scheduled for Sunday, March 26 thru Friday, March 31. The trip
will be similar to last year's trip to Italy. Information about the tour (draft
agenda, registration form and
participation agreement) is attached.
Participants will purchase this trip directly from the German Wine Institute and
be responsible for their own plane travel. The tour fee is 1350 Euro ($1,625)
and will include everything but souvenirs. Your air transportation will be up
to you. Payments are made directly to the German Wine Academy. The deadline
for this is January 29, 2006. A minimum of 18 travelers is required to go
forward with this trip. I have seen some very good fares on 1800FlyEurope.com,
Orbitz, Expedia. If you have an interest in going, I suggest you check out
flights and costs. You should plan on arriving before 3:00 p.m. in Frankfurt.
The tour begins with a welcome and dinner on Sunday evening. Travel will be by
bus and there will be one hotel change. The tour ends with a farewell dinner on
Friday at 7:00 p.m.
Last year's trip to Italy was great fun and incredibly educational. This year's
should be equal to it. I will be happy to address any questions you might have.
