Question from the Vineyard/Winery:

I have added this section to address a frequently asked question at a certain time of the year or stage of development of grapevines. The question is answered by one of our State Specialists. In early spring and before bud break, the following question is often asked: “Does dormant spray such as lime sulfur control certain grape diseases? In other words is it worth it?” Dr. Mike Ellis graciously wrote a note on this topic see attached file (Dormant Applications Ellis)…Hope that answers the question.

Effective Fungicide Spray Program: by Dr. Mike Ellis

For those who missed the Ohio Grape-Wine Short Course, Dr. Ellis provided a handout (see attached Grape Spray Program_OH_05) on “developing an effective fungicide spray program for wine grapes in Ohio”. The suggested guidelines are extremely helpful especially with the incorporation of the newly-released fungicides. If you have questions, please contact Dr. Mike Ellis at 330-263-3849 or ellis.7@osu.edu.

New Ohio State Extension Publication: Midwest Small Fruit Pest Management Handbook

I am sure you have already heard about this new publication. Handbooks were available at the 2005 Ohio Grape-Wine Short Course. This 200+ page handbook is an excellent resource for producers, educators, and students about pests in grapes and other small fruit crops. There are more than 200 colored photographs on disease symptoms, insects, mites, and weeds. I strongly recommend this book for our commercial growers. We thank Dr. Mike Ellis for leading the effort to revise and produce this 2005 publication with the collaboration of Specialists from Ohio and the Midwest.  For ordering information, see the attached flyer.

Error in the Midwest Commercial Small Fruit and Grape Spray Guide 2005:

This spray guide complements the handbook listed above with annual update on pesticides. Please, make the following corrections to the 2005 guide:

§         Page18. Under " Downy Mildew -- Use of Ridomil Gold MZ and Ridomil Gold Copper "

The pre harvest interval for Ridomil Gold MZ is still 66 days. The Pre harvest interval for Ridomil Gold Copper has been reduced to 42 days.

§         Page 50.  Table 8 " Fungicide Harvest Restrictions and Restricted - Entry Intervals "

The pre harvest interval for Mancozeb on grapes is still 66 days. It is mistakenly listed in the table as 42 days.

PLEASE REMEMBER that it is the responsibility of the pesticide user to read the label on all products to determine and confirm the current use recommendations.
