How to use AlfalfaPro

AlfalfaPro is a multiplatform application. You can run the program on either a PC running Vista or earlier as well as a Mac running version 10.5.8 or earlier. To open the files, double click on "AlfalfaPro.zip" file, and extract the files using WinZip, Stuffit (free at http://www.stuffit.com/win/expander/index.html ), windows extraction software or similar extraction programs. At the beginning of the extraction you will be prompted for the encryption password which was given to you in class. The program will, upon extraction, create a folder that contains AlfalfaPro.exe (executable jar file) and three other files which are part of the program.

To start AlfalfaPro, double click on the AlfalfaPro exe file. The program will open in a new window. Please click on "start a new test" to begin.

  1. From this menu choose Session Purpose: Practice
  2. Modify the generic file name to a more useful file name. Remove the subfolder "tests" from the generic file name. Otherwise, the file cannot be saved for there was not a subfolder called tests created.
  3. Select alfalfa leaf #1
  4. Select Disease: Necrotic (black w/chlorosis option) from the list
  5. Within Disease Customization choose: no chlorosis and random lesions
  6. Select # of Leaves: 20
  7. Disease Severity Range 5 to 95
  8. Show the actual percentage: Yes for one test and No for the other test
  9. Click OK
  10. Place your estimate of the total area of disease as a percentage in the box and click ok. Perform this with each of the leaves in the test.
  11. When you finish with all 20 leaves a table of results is shown. Print and save this table. You will be asked to update the existing file you created earlier: click ok. AlfalfaPro provides two additional ways to examine your score. Print and save the graph as well as the statistical analysis, of your data which are found by the tabs at the top of the window.
  12. Repeat the test for the other conditions discussed in the homework assignment and save this test as well but with a different file name.
