The goal of the National Integrated Water Quality Program is to improve the quality of our Nation's surface water and groundwater resources through research, education, and extension activities. Projects funded through this program will facilitate achieving this goal by advancing and disseminating the knowledge base available to agricultural and rural communities. Funded projects should lead to science-based decision-making and management practices that improve the quality of the Nation's surface water and groundwater resources in agricultural and rural watersheds.

USDA/CSREES Higher Education Multicultural Scholars Program.
The purpose of this competitive undergraduate scholarship grant program is to increase the multicultural diversity of the food and agricultural scientific and professional workforce, and advance the educational achievement of all Americans by providing competitive grants to colleges and universities. This program solicits applications to train students in the Emphasis Areas of (1)Veterinary Medicine (First Professional Degree in Veterinary Medicine); (2) Agricultural Sciences and Engineering for Bioenergy; (3) Natural Resources Sciences Training; (4) Human Sciences
Training; (5) Food Science and Human Nutrition Training; and (6) Agrosecurity Science Training.
Applications are sought for student training that: (i) will prepare graduates to meet the demand for highly qualified personnel entering the workforce in the food and agricultural sciences domain; (ii) will pipeline more undergraduates into graduate education in the food and agricultural sciences; (iii) will address the substantial gap between White, Latino and African American populations entering graduate schools to enable the American system of higher education to remain competitive with the rest of the world; (iv) will promote students' success in food and agricultural
science disciplines at the undergraduate/DVM level; and (v) will focus on student learning, e.g., academic preparation, social support structure (tutoring, mentoring, experiential opportunities in research and study abroad), and professional mentoring to ensure matriculation and entry into food and agricultural sciences areas of graduate education or the workforce. Also, Special Experiential Learning (SEL) opportunities to support eligible USDA Multicultural Scholars to conduct research or to undertake studies at sites within or outside of the United States. SEL awards for eligible USDA Multicultural Scholars will only be available as provided for within this announcement.

    The National Research Council of the National Academies sponsors a number of awards for postdoctoral and senior researchers at federal laboratories. These awards provide generous stipends ($42,000 - $72,000 per year for recent Ph.D. recipients and higher for additional experience), and the opportunity to do independent research in some of the best-equipped and staffed laboratories in the country.

  DOE and USDA WASHINGTON – The U.S. Departments of Energy (DOE) and Agriculture (USDA) today announced up to $25 million in funding for research and development of technologies and processes to produce biofuels, bioenergy, and high-value biobased products, subject to annual appropriations.

Award amounts are planned to range from $1 million to up to $5 million with project periods up to four years, subject to annual appropriations.  Eligible applicants include institutions of higher education, national laboratories, federal research agencies, state research agencies, private sector entities, non-profit organizations, or a consortium of two or more of those entities.

Assistance in Preparing NSF Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award Proposals
The National Science Foundation’s popular CAREER Award program (http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2008/nsf08557/nsf08557.pdf) provides 5 years of financial support for untenured, tenure-track faculty who “effectively integrate research and education within the context of the mission of their organization.” Proposal due dates vary by research discipline but are all in late July. Project GRO assists in the development of the education and outreach portions of CAREER proposals and helps faculty develop partnerships to support their outreach efforts.

The Choose Ohio First for Bioinformatics Scholarship Program

The Choose Ohio First (COF) Scholarship provides $4700 per year to incoming freshmen, transfer students, upperclassmen, or graduate students who demonstrate academic excellence and an interest in the field. The program was established through a competitive grant awarded to the Ohio Bioinformatics Consortium by the State of Ohio, a consortium of multiple institutions.  This is the information relating to scholarships to be awarded to students at The Ohio State University.

 

How to apply  To apply, please fill out the application below and submit it to Dr. Steven I. Gordon (gordon.1@osu.edu).  Proposals will be reviewed by our scholarship review committee on a regular basis and decisions transmitted to prospective applicants.

 

Who should apply All students who have an interest in computation and/or biology or chemistry. Preference will be given to those who have some background in both.  Students may major in a range of academic disciplines that utilize computer science to manage biological data, including Biological Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, PreMed, Chemistry/Biochemistry, Computer Science, Environmental and Plant Biology, Mathematics, Science Education, Health Sciences, Biomedical Engineering.  Students may apply as incoming freshmen, incoming transfer students or at any time during their academic career.

 

Eligibility

 

 All students must be residents of Ohio (i.e. considered “in-state”).

 

Entering freshmen

 Top 20 percent of his or her high school graduating class, or 1150 SAT. Minimum 25 ACT or

 

Transfer and returning undergraduates

 GPA of 2.8 overall and 3.0 in their major.  Statement of their future career goals and how participating in this program will impact their career goals.

 

Graduate students should

·      have completed a BS or MS in a biology, chemistry, computer science or related field;

·      have a minimum GPA of 3.0;

·      have a background in computer science, biology or biochemistry;

·      meet all requirements and gain admission to the “home” department or program of their choice
