| Indiana Corn Marketing Council |
The Indiana Corn Marketing Council (ICMC) has accepted and approved its livestock program initiative to promote the consumption of corn and corn co-products for a strong livestock industry. The growth in the ethanol industry in Indiana coupled with the opportunity of a local market for feeding distillers grains, (wet, dried, gluten meal, gluten feed, or fractionated) to livestock and poultry creates an environment for Indiana’s corn growers, livestock producers and ethanol industry to become mutual benefactors in today’s feed ingredient marketplace. To remain competitive, livestock and poultry producers need to have demand for their products, access to markets and readily available, consistent inputs – feed ingredients in this case. The demand on ethanol plants to provide high quality co-products like fractionated dried distillers grains will increase in areas where swine and poultry producers prefer using dried distiller grains (DDG). Fractionated processing of DDG is relatively new technology to provide a final end product that is better suited for the non-ruminant animal, it can be higher protein and lower fiber and lower oil content compared to conventionally processed DDGs. Indiana has an established and growing layer hen and turkey industries that may not be taking advantage of this next generation DDG, either because of limited knowledge, experience or more likely limited availability of fractionated DDG. Research will need to be completed in the areas of nutrient digestibility (amino acids, protein, energy, minerals), egg production and growth performance in broiler chicks, laying hens, and turkeys. The RFP includes application instructions, project descriptions for FY09 projects listed under Specific Activities, and a form for a descriptive itemized budget. If any of the proposed activity projects can be combined, such that supplies, labor, laboratory equipment, etc. can add synergies and cost savings to the research, it is acceptable and encouraged to do so. |
