"Ice Storm Hits OARDC Campus...December 22-23, 2004"

ice over doorway at back of Thorne Hall

During a 24 hour period from the morning of Wednesday, December 22nd until around noon the next day, a slow moving winter storm cut a swath through the state that left approximately 8" of heavy wet snow on the campus. What was even more damaging was the heavy rain that fell during a brief period towards the end of the storm, which left everything coated in a thick layer of ice that remained for a six day period.  We were extremely fortunate that we did not also incur strong winds during this period, but even so the damage to plant material (and power lines!) was devastating to many areas including the O.A.R.D.C. campus and Secrest Arboretum.  To view pictures of the "aftermath" taken in the days and weeks that followed the storm, click on the following link:   Ice Storm Damage
