Research Associate in Bioenergy
The Department of Biology and Agricultural Environmental Research Station at the West Virginia State University (WVSU) is looking for highly motivated candidate for a Research Associate for WVSU Energy and Environmental Science Institute-funded project for a year to study plant carbon metabolism and bioenergy. The specific focus of the project is to understand the mechanisms of lipid metabolism, regulation and storage in photosynthetic organisms. The project involves biochemical characterization of surface, membrane and neutral lipid metabolic pathway, generation of transgenic/ mutants impaired in lipid accumulation in seed and vegetative tissues, quantification of different lipids (membrane lipids and triglycerides), other metabolites, transcriptomic and proteomic analysis of transgenic/ mutants in response to different environmental stresses.
The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline, experience in analytical biochemistry, particularly lipid identification and quantification, molecular biology and related fields and record of publications. Experience in working with plants and green algae is desired. The research associate is expected to be creative and independent and also work as a team and oversee routine lab management and maintenance tasks. Postdoctoral Research Associate Position in Biofuel/Bioenergy field with emphasis on Biomass pretreatment
Bioenergy and Environment Group of Dr. Samir Khanal in the Dept. of Molecular Biosciences and Bioengineering, University of Hawaii at Manoa has an immediate opening for a post- doctoral research associate for a year with the possibility of renewable for another year depending upon performance and availability of funds.
Duties: Laboratory research related to biofuel production from high yield tropical grasses. Work will also involve direct interaction with Project PI and graduate students. Duties include, but limited to the supervision of graduate/undergraduate students, thesis review, preparing journal/conference papers, grant writing, and maintaining and operating the bioenergy laboratory.
Minimum qualifications: PhD in biochemical, bioprocessing, biological engineering or closely related engineering field with research focus on “biorenergy/biofuel”; research experience and expertise in the field of biofuel and biobased product development with particular emphasis on biomass pretreatment and compositional analysis of lignocellulosic biomass desirable; engineering and biological background preferred; knowledge of analytical instrumentation, fermentation and hands-on experience in laboratory work, especially in bioenergy.
Pay range: Salary is highly competitive commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities: Performs experiments which are designed to provide answers for specific research problem areas. Performs the proper experimental procedure(s). Searches literature for methods to meet assignment objectives. Carries out measurements and analyses by applying established chemical/engineering methods, using microcomputers when appropriate. Analyzes the results according to established principles and procedures. Writes manuscripts and periodic laboratory reports discussing experimental procedures and results. Undertakes routine care, maintenance, and calibration of laboratory instruments. Oversees safe graduate and undergraduate work in the lab. Maintains official laboratory notebook in accordance with good laboratory practices. Maintains general laboratory cleanliness and, supplies and materials are kept up-to-date. Responsibilities may include greenhouse work. Qualifications: PhD in Food Science, Food Engineering, Biosystems Engineering or Chemical Engineering. Excellent oral and written communication and laboratory management skills. Ability to work well in a team environment. Hands-on experience with chromatographic techniques specifically, HPLC and GC-MS. Experience with GLP (Good laboratory techniques). Experience with oil quality and processing techniques. Ability to prepare and follow standard operating procedures. A strong and proactive approach to safety and good working safety record. Strong organizational and multitasking skills. Microbiology knowledge is a plus.
