Text Box: Metabolic Profiling
Our lab was a pioneer in the development of metabolic profiling procedures (T. L. Graham. 1991. A rapid, high resolution HPLC profiling procedure for plant and microbial aromatic secondary metabolites.  Plant Physiology 95:584-593).
In a single metabolic profile we can separate several hundred metabolites providing a "snapshot" of metabolism in a tissue.  When combined with temporal and spatial sampling of plant tissues, this allows us a very dynamic "moving picture" of what is happening in the cells at the metabolite level.  Thus, this approach is a very powerful complement to gene expression analysis for metabolic enzymes.
Our lab has used this approach to define responses to key signaling molecules at a cellular level.  Below are some examples of elicitor and other treatments.  Panel A is a control plant.
