Introduction

The Office of International Affairs at Ohio State University administers over 100 study abroad programs in more than 40 different countries. These programs give students an opportunity to become involved in cross-cultural interaction and enjoy a rewarding educational experience in various fields. In the fall quarter of 2008, Dr. Doug Doohan, Associate Professor of Weed Science at the OARDC in Wooster, Ohio, taught a course entitled "Agriculture and Agro Ecosystems in Chile" (HCS 593/693) open to all majors for five credit hours. This course included in-class background material on the history and economics of Chile taught at the main campus, followed by a 12 day excursion to Chile in December. The trip involved extensive bus travel through most of the agronomically important areas of Chile targeting agricultural based industries for export. Sites visited included vineyards and citrus groves, vegetable production farms, a salmon fishery and a large dairy farm. We also were able to partake in fun activities such as exploring inactive volcanoes, zip lines, an astronomy center, beachcombing, shopping and sampling local food. We put together a daily slide show of our trip and we encourage you to click on the link to see some of the highlights we were able to see. Future study abroad trips are being planned; it is a great way to learn and see another country. The next scheduled course on Chile will be taught by Dr. Mark Bennet in the fall quarter, (Dec 11-21 2009), and Dr. Doug Doohan will be offering the course in 2010.
