Biography
Mabel Barinas is from the Dominican Republic she began her work in agriculture when she was a student at The Instituto Politecnico Loyola in her hometown of San Cristobal. She graduated as an agronomic technician in 2004, through this enriching experience she learned of a prestigious university in Latin America called Escuela Agricola Panamericana (Zamorano) and she applied and was accepted in 2005. She graduated with a Bachelor degree in Socioeconomic Development and Environment in 2008.
As a student in the university she was involved in the: “Learning by doing” system where students go to the fields to work as a farmer. In addition the year before her graduation she had the opportunity to share her knowledge acquired at Zamorano by completing an internship in a small town in the northwest of Brazil. She participated in the formation of a NGO community organization COLECTIVO, whose mission is to educate the citizen from Diogo (Brazil) in different means of economics development such as: agriculture and tourism. She also worked collecting and classifying international marine waste that was improperly deposited from the beaches. After analysis this data was then sent to the embassy of the countries that the waste originated from.
Once she completed her internship she returns to Zamorano to complete her studies. In 2009 she came to The Ohio State University to work with Dr. Douglas Doohan as a visiting scholar. Her work includes the Food Safety Education program as well as greenhouse research. She is planning to pursue a master degree in the Horticulture and Crop Science Department at The Ohio State University.
