About Secrest Arboretum
Secrest Arboretum is a major research arboretum and is considered unique by
many plant enthusiasts. Located on 85 acres of rolling land, the arboretum
offers both the flora researcher and the plant enthusiast more than 2,000
species, varieties and cultivars of trees and shrubs for evaluation and
viewing.
The arboretum is named for Edmund Secrest, the first state forester and a
former director of the Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station. Plantings of
trees and shrubs have been made continuously since 1909 with trees from
Ohio, the nation and around the world.
The arboretum grounds, as well as all of OARDC's Wooster campus, are open
to the public seven days a week, dawn to dusk. Maps and brochures are
available at locations on campus and in the arboretum. Note: Except for
special events like the Wooster Garden Festival, there are no restroom
facilities in the arboretum. Restrooms are at the OARDC Visitor Center in
the Research Services Building, but the building isn't open on weekends.
Hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information,
call (330) 263-3761.
To Volunteer
You're invited to join the Secrest Arboretum Volunteers, who work to
improve the arboretum's plants and programs. You can help as much or as
little as you wish, doing any activity of your choosing. You can tend a
flower bed ... take photographs ... help out at Plant Discovery Day (plant
sale and auction on the first Saturday in May) or at the Wooster Garden
Festival ... plant plants ... pull weeds ... bake bread (in the outdoor
oven at the garden festival) ... write for a newsletter (Green Times,
published by the Volunteers) ... prune, water or fertilize ... you name it!
If you have a suggestion as to how you'd like to help, call Ken Cochran at
(330) 263-3761. He'd be happy to hear from you-and happy for your help.
